TopStrengths: Goes really wide on a full frame 5D body. Solid Construction
Weakness: Minor vignetting at 16-18mm. 82mm filter size. yikes
Overall, great lens. I don't do wide shots all that often, but when you need it, and can't step back any further, this lens is TOP notch. Even on a crop body, it would be recommended.

TopStrengths: Corner-to-corner sharpness, colors, contrast
Weakness: Size
I used to have a 17-40 f/L and 16-35 f/2.8 mkI in my bag
This lens is not disappointing. 2.8 makes a huge difference if you want to shoot inside. mk2 is quite sharper then mk1.
The only complain - it does not fit into my bag anymore.

TopStrengths: Super optics, very sharp, excellent contrast. Ive not noticed any flare. CA very slight at full aperture, but hardly noticeable. Highly recommend this fine lens.
Weakness: Usual 82mm filter size moan.
This lens is a fantastic ultra-wide angle tool. I've been able to shoot everything with crystal clear clarity and precision. SO much has been said about the "dark-cornering," but at f/9 there's no visible fall-off. I purchased this lens, refurbished by canon and so far, I've taken several printable lansdscape shots.
I was reluctant to purchase this lens because several reviewers had posted comments about "dark cornering." Used indoors, there maybe some, however, with flash and beyond the f/2.8 aperture, this lens is truly worth having.
I surmise that with the EOS 1Ds Mark II, this lens has greater capabilities. Using it with a full frame camera should alleviate any trepidation on the part of a prospective buyer.
My suggestion: go ahead, get it if you can afford it. The results, with the right settings are sure to produce some gems.

TopStrengths: wide angle
Weakness: ok image at 35mm end
The image taken at 16mm end is sharp. But those take at 35mm are just ok. That's why people would want Canon EF 35mm f/1.4. I bought this with canon instant rebate and very happy with the price. The lens retracts when you try to zoom. You may want to add a 82mm UV filter to protect it.

TopStrengths: 1. Better edge-to-edge IQ than mark I 2. Better IQ than 17-40mm in general 3. f/2.8 is a plus to some, including myself
Weakness: 82mm filter size is just crazy and expensive. Canon should've just keep it in 77mm and make our life easier (on buying filters)
Talk about Wide Angle (or Ultra Wide Angle if you would like), the only 2 choices you have are: 16-35mm II and 17-40mm. I have the 17-40mm in hand now and I have decided to upgrade due to better IQ quality, light-fallout control, and bigger aperture.
Right now I am using 5D with this lenses and it's really wide. In the future, I will be pair this lenses with APS-H cameras, and it will be 16-35 * 1.3X = 20-45mm, which is the standard-to-wide range and it's going to be an amzaing combo. So, if you are going for the APS-H, you might want to consider this lenses as well.
As far as I can tell, this lenses is a big performer in WA. If you have't have any WA lenses in hand, you should pay some attention to it.

TopStrengths: This lens is compact and provides outstanding sharp images over a very wide field all the way out to full 35mm format.
Weakness: Expensive
This is an extraordinary lens for the serious amateur or the professional. It provides a very large field at 16mm focal length, which is essential for wide angle photography especially with the reduced format of the DX digital cameras. A terrific lens to fill out your equipment bag for landscapes and indoor images in tight spaces.

Canon 16-35 II
Strengths: aperture at 2.8, sharp
Weakness: price
I upgraded from a 17-40, and have used this lens for wedding on a 5D. The 17/40 was not bad, but the corner sharpness of the 16/35II is really significantly better on a full-frame camera - well worth the upgrade. For me, this quickly became a lens which I can just use and forget - it does not seem to have any issues or restrictions that would need to be taken into account. This is a very good thing indeed. Highly recommended.
