Canon 100mm 2.8L macro IS lens
Strengths: light weight, IS helps
Weakness: all plastic lens. pricey. not very sharp
This lens is nowhere as sharp as the Nikon 105mm 2.8 VR micro lens. I know because I also have that lens. I don't think it is worth $1049.00

Interesting point as I haven't seen the Nikon, but I would question the "unbiased" result. DP Review (the biggest, unbiased web photography site) stated that the Canon 100IS results were so good they repeated the test to confirm. When they did the results were even better.
So I would question any comparison of a Nikon to a Canon, as usually they are not totally objective. If the tests were well planned, I would then question the shooting mode RAW or JPEG and the difference in camera (can we assume that two different cameras were used?). If different cameras were used then the test is rubbish. Also if shooting RAW (which you should be for macro/quality) how was the image converted as all software programs can produce very different results.

Great lens
Strengths: sharp, well built, H-IS
Weakness: pricey
This is my first L lens...construction is great. compared to my 17-55 where the zoom ring rocks...the focus ring on the 100mm macro is rock solid. I've only tried hand-held macro shots and they've turned out very well.
